3D Systems, MakerBot Announce New Consumer 3D Printers

This week at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, popular consumer 3D printing brands 3D Systems and MakerBot Industries announced numerous new consumer 3D printers, 3D printing applications and other solutions. The show has become a staple for 3D printing vendors that participate in the area of consumer 3D printing, whether it be in hardware, software or services. As two of the leading manufacturers of 3D printers in the space, much anticipation surrounded both 3D Systems and MakerBot regarding new desktop 3D printers.

MakerBot announced three new printers, including the next generation of their flagship Replicator printer, as well as a miniature version and the new larger and professionally focused Z18 printer. Meanwhile, 3D Systems announced a slew of new consumer 3D products including six new printers, multiple 3D scanning and content authoring devices, and even a retail 3D scanning photo booth.

Our View

Both 3D Systems and MakerBot made a big impact at the show, solidifying CES as the go-to event for the personal and consumer 3D printing market segment. Few other new product announcements from other vendors were made at the show this year, likely as not to get lost in the larger-than-life battle for market dominance between 3D Systems and MakerBot.
