Difficult Third Quarter Breaks Canon’s Streak After Five Consecutive Quarters of Increased Profit

On October 27, 2014, Canon, Inc. reported its third quarter earnings for 2014. Consolidated net sales for the quarter were $8.0 billion (a decline of 4.5 percent year-to-year (YTY)). This decline in net sales and an increase in operating expense led to operating profit of $0.6 billion (a decline of 20.7 percent YTY). Within the Office Business Unit, sales of color office multifunction devices increased significantly but were offset by the decrease in demand for monochrome devices. The Imaging System segment saw sales volume for hardware remain similar to that seen in 2013, but the sale of consumables increased YTY.
