The Aftermarket Office Printer Cartridge Business is Big and Growing

Photizo focuses very much on the Office Printer Cartridge Market because the revenue and profit contribution to printer manufacturers or to aftermarket cartridge suppliers is so significant.  To a printer manufacturer, office printer supplies can account for 60-70% of overall printer business revenue and a higher % of profits.  Losing a few % points of market share can be catastrophic to a printer manufacturer while a win fall for aftermarket cartridge suppliers.  According to HP Inc.’s most recent quarterly financials, 62% of their total revenue came from office printer supplies!  This is why printer manufacturers are so focused on how they maximize the sale of OEM branded supplies on to their installed based of products and on minimizing the market share from aftermarket suppliers.  Most printer manufacturers have programs in place that do in fact minimize the penetration from aftermarket cartridge.  Supplies replenishment/subscription programs such HP’s Instant Ink program attempt to retain ongoing business from their installed base of customers.  Xerox not only has their own supplies subscription program but they also offer Xerox branded office printer cartridges for non-Xerox branded devices,  Because Xerox is a leader in the MPS market whereby they have contracts in place (on average 4 years), so in reality, only about 13 percent of their supplies market (on to their installed base) is vulnerable to aftermarket supplies providers.  In addition to these programs, of course, Photizo expects that printer manufacturers will continue to be relentless in protecting their cartridge patents, making claims regarding voiding warranties, and doing whatever they can do to prevent or at least delay the penetration of aftermarket suppliers selling on to their installed base.

It is no secret that the aftermarket office printer cartridge business is big, really big.  According to Photizo’s 2016 Office Supplies Forecast, the aftermarket printer cartridge market in 2016 is expected to be about $16B, about $10B in laser printer cartridges, and $6B in inkjet printer cartridges (see Figures 1 and 2 below).  Today’s leading aftermarket cartridge suppliers are large companies with large R&D budgets often rivaling the budgets supplies groups within printer manufacturers.
